The R220 million rehabilitation of the R331 between Humansdorp and Hankey has been completed and officially handed over by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport.
Kouga Local Municipality welcomed the handover on 13 October 2026, describing the route as important to residents, businesses and regional movement.
A completed route and a separate commitment
The provincial department also indicated that it intends to award a contract for rehabilitation of the road between Humansdorp and Cape St Francis. It said maintenance would continue while resources for that longer-term project are mobilised.
The two routes should be tracked separately. The Humansdorp–Hankey work has reached handover, while the Cape St Francis route remains a future procurement and funding commitment.
Opening and handover move a road into operation, but close-out work and the normal maintenance cycle continue. Road users should follow current signs and report defects through the responsible road authority.
What we will track next
The next useful update on R220m R331 rehabilitation handed over between Humansdorp and Hankey should separate emergency access, construction progress and final handover. Contract value, kilometres treated, drainage work, revised dates and independent quality results give a clearer picture than a single percentage.
After opening, performance still needs observation. Pavement edges, culverts, bridge joints, slopes and erosion protection often reveal problems during the first wet season. A named maintenance authority and a baseline condition record make that follow-up possible.
