Built Report
Editorial Standards
Accuracy, fairness and independence.
Accuracy and verification
Built Report publishes information that can be attributed, checked and explained. Reporters should confirm names, dates, locations, values and technical descriptions against primary records wherever possible. Press releases and company statements may be useful sources, but they are assessed alongside contracts, official notices, site evidence, professional records and independent responses.
Material allegations require careful review and a meaningful opportunity for the affected party to respond before publication. A lack of response is recorded fairly; it is not presented as proof of an allegation.
Independence and labels
Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors, companies and political interests. Advertising and sponsored content must be clearly labelled. Payment for commercial placement does not purchase favourable news coverage or prevent critical reporting.
News reports distinguish observed facts from claims and analysis. Opinion reflects the stated author’s argument. Analysis interprets available evidence and should identify material assumptions or gaps.
Sources, photographs and quotations
Sources are linked or described at the end of an article. Confidential sources are used only when the information serves a clear public interest and the source faces a credible reason not to be named. Editors should know the identity of a confidential source and test the information against other evidence.
Direct quotations must reflect what the source said. Paraphrases must preserve the source’s meaning. Photographs must be relevant to the article, accurately captioned and approved for editorial use. Manipulation that changes the factual meaning of a news image is prohibited.
Corrections and conflicts
Material errors are corrected promptly and visibly. Authors and editors must disclose financial, professional or personal interests that could reasonably affect their work. When a conflict cannot be managed transparently, the assignment should be given to another writer.
