An oversight visit to PRASA operations in Gauteng has reviewed improvements along the Mabopane rail corridor and the launch of a new City to City bus fleet.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport said the programme included attention to signalling, corridor infrastructure and restoration work intended to strengthen passenger-rail operations.
Infrastructure and operations
Rail recovery depends on linked systems rather than a single construction item. Track, power, signalling, stations, security and rolling stock must operate together for a corridor to provide a reliable service.
The City to City fleet is a separate intercity-bus component within PRASA's broader passenger-transport role. New vehicles can improve service capacity, but depot facilities, maintenance, scheduling and operating controls determine how that capacity performs over time.
The official statement published on 15 October 2026 did not provide a complete project value or final construction timetable for every rail intervention discussed during the visit. This report therefore does not add estimates.
An oversight statement records government attention and reported progress. Confirmed commissioning dates, contract awards and service changes should be checked against later PRASA and provincial notices. Passengers should continue to use current operator timetables and service alerts when planning a journey.
What we will track next
The next useful update on PRASA review focuses on Mabopane rail restoration and new intercity buses should separate emergency access, construction progress and final handover. Contract value, kilometres treated, drainage work, revised dates and independent quality results give a clearer picture than a single percentage.
After opening, performance still needs observation. Pavement edges, culverts, bridge joints, slopes and erosion protection often reveal problems during the first wet season. A named maintenance authority and a baseline condition record make that follow-up possible.
