South African privacy rights

The Protection of Personal Information Act regulates how personal information is collected, used, stored and disclosed. Built Report seeks to process personal information for a specific and lawful purpose, use no more information than is reasonably needed and protect it against unauthorised access or loss.

Data-subject requests

A person may request confirmation that personal information is held, ask for access to it or seek correction or deletion where the information is inaccurate, excessive, out of date, misleading or unlawfully obtained. Some records may need to be retained for legal, contractual, security or journalistic purposes.

Requests can be submitted through the contact form or to the privacy contact listed on this page. The publication may ask for proof of identity before releasing or changing personal information.

Journalism and public interest

Privacy requests involving published journalism require a balance between personal rights, freedom of expression, accuracy and the public interest. A request does not automatically require the removal of accurate reporting, but it will be assessed carefully and the outcome explained where appropriate.
