The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure scheduled the formal opening of the upgraded Louis Fourie Road in Mossel Bay for 16 October, marking the completion milestone of a four-year provincial road investment.
The department valued the project at R530 million and described it as one of the largest single government investments in the Garden Route District Municipality.
A strategic Mossel Bay route
Louis Fourie Road forms part of Route R102 and links central Mossel Bay with Diaz Beach, Voorbaai and Hartenbos. The construction programme has taken place within a developed corridor containing active intersections, businesses, homes and underground services.
Earlier departmental project information identified ageing water and sewer services and constrained access around work zones among the complexities faced during construction.
The opening event was planned at the Langeberg Mall intersection. The department’s announcement did not present a final post-completion account of every contract item, so this report does not infer details beyond the published project update.
Road users should continue to observe permanent markings, signals and any remaining traffic-management instructions as the corridor moves from construction into operation.
Built Report will update this record if the department publishes a final completion statement with confirmed scope, expenditure and handover details.
What we will track next
The next useful update on R530m Louis Fourie Road upgrade reaches opening milestone in Mossel Bay should separate emergency access, construction progress and final handover. Contract value, kilometres treated, drainage work, revised dates and independent quality results give a clearer picture than a single percentage.
After opening, performance still needs observation. Pavement edges, culverts, bridge joints, slopes and erosion protection often reveal problems during the first wet season. A named maintenance authority and a baseline condition record make that follow-up possible.
