The City of Cape Town has moved the next group of MyCiTi station works into construction in Hanover Park and Mitchells Plain as part of the Phase 2A public-transport expansion.

The programme includes the new Sesame Station and Hanover Park Station, together with an expansion of the existing Mitchells Plain facility. They form part of a wider package of ten station projects that the City said would begin from September 2026.

Construction across active urban routes

Station construction in established neighbourhoods requires traffic and pedestrian management while civil, structural, electrical and public-realm work proceeds. Access arrangements may change as work fronts move, particularly where a station interfaces with a busy road, existing public transport and nearby homes or businesses.

The City's published programme targets July 2027 for completion if work proceeds according to plan. That date remains a programme target rather than a guarantee and may be affected by site conditions, utility interfaces, weather or disruption.

The Phase 2A expansion is intended to improve public-transport connections across the metro's south-east. Stations are only one part of that system: road infrastructure, depots, vehicles, operations, fare systems and safe walking connections must work together before the full service benefit is realised.

Residents and road users should follow the City's current construction notices for temporary lane arrangements and access changes. Built Report will record confirmed handovers as individual stations reach completion.

What we will track next

For Three new MyCiTi station projects move onto the Cape Flats programme, physical completion should be connected to the passenger journey. Track access, signalling, power, security, scheduled services, cancellations and the condition of station facilities rather than relying on an opening announcement alone.

A useful close-out record identifies which systems are operating permanently, which remain under temporary arrangements and who responds when lifts, gates, lighting or information systems fail. The service outcome is the final test of the capital work.
