The new Malmesbury bypass has opened to traffic following a R693 million construction programme, the Western Cape Government announced on 1 April 2026.
The 6.7km greenfield road is intended to divert through-traffic away from the centre of Malmesbury and improve the regional connection around the town. Construction started in May 2023.
Bridges and a new interchange
The completed route includes five bridges and a grade-separated interchange at the R45 and R46. Separating traffic movements at the interchange reduces direct conflicts compared with an at-grade junction and allows the bypass to operate as a regional route.
A greenfield road requires more than the surfaced carriageway. Earthworks, drainage, structures, safety barriers, signs, road markings and environmental rehabilitation all contribute to the delivered asset.
Opening a road is an important milestone, but the asset still enters a maintenance cycle and may have contract close-out or defect-liability work after traffic begins using it. Drivers should follow the permanent signs and lane arrangements rather than older navigation instructions created before the bypass opened.
Built Report records the project value, length, structures and construction start from the provincial opening statement. Future changes to adjoining local roads or development around the interchange should be assessed through separate planning and project records.
What we will track next
The next useful update on R693m Malmesbury bypass opens to traffic should separate emergency access, construction progress and final handover. Contract value, kilometres treated, drainage work, revised dates and independent quality results give a clearer picture than a single percentage.
After opening, performance still needs observation. Pavement edges, culverts, bridge joints, slopes and erosion protection often reveal problems during the first wet season. A named maintenance authority and a baseline condition record make that follow-up possible.
