The Free State government has allocated R1.4 billion in 2026/27 to complete existing road projects, with rural routes, small-town connectivity and pothole eradication identified as priorities.

The allocation was announced in the provincial State of the Province Address on 20 February 2026. The province also plans to procure ten new road construction and maintenance projects toward the end of the financial year.

Six completed maintenance corridors

Government listed reseal and fog-spray work completed during 2025/26 on the Kroonstad–Bothaville, Dealesville–Bloemfontein, Jagersfontein–Bloemfontein, Hoopstad–Bultfontein, Zastron–Wepener and Sasolburg–Deneysville roads.

The R1.4 billion allocation is a programme figure. Individual tender notices and award records will determine the scope, value and schedule of each contract. The ten proposed projects should therefore not be treated as awarded work until procurement results are published.

Built Report will track those later milestones and distinguish maintenance packages from full road reconstruction.

What we will track next

The next useful update on Free State allocates R1.4bn to complete existing road projects should separate emergency access, construction progress and final handover. Contract value, kilometres treated, drainage work, revised dates and independent quality results give a clearer picture than a single percentage.

After opening, performance still needs observation. Pavement edges, culverts, bridge joints, slopes and erosion protection often reveal problems during the first wet season. A named maintenance authority and a baseline condition record make that follow-up possible.
